Maggie McGrady on God’s Creation

By Gary Chamberlain

Maggie McGrady is the daughter of Mickey and Kenny Jo McGrady and I recently ran into Kenny Jo McGrady at the Murphy Ingles store and she shared Maggie’s passion for picking up litter.

As the spokesman for the North Carolina Litter-Free Coalition, I have access to the people who could provide Maggie the items she needs to safely recover and dispose of the litter that others seem to ignore.

I have known of Maggie’s parents for over twenty years and they are the most kind and considerate people you would ever want to meet.

In an email to me, these are the words of Maggie’s mother to describe her daughter,

“Maggie is a beautiful young lady that has a huge heart. She loves to help others.

Maggie always has a smile on her face, she doesn't know a stranger and she loves to share her heart with everyone and always is ready with a hug. I mentioned to Maggie it wasn't safe to pick up trash without having gloves, to make sure she pays special attention to what she is picking up.

Maggie loves art. Maggie mentioned that God made the most beautiful art every day; and to help keep God’s masterpiece beautiful, she will pick up every piece of trash she comes across.”

In the process of my sharing Maggie’s story with others, Maggie received a letter from Kim Wheeless - NCDOT Office of Beautification commending her for her efforts.

Between the North Carolina Litter-Free Coalition and the Murphy Lowes Home Improvement store, Maggie received gloves, litter bags, and a litter grabber to improve the safety issues associated with picking up litter.

Brandon Willis-Lowes Store Manager and I recently presented anti-litter products to Maggie and praised her for her efforts. Lowes Home Improvement is a participant in the NC Adopt-A-Highway Program and provides anti-litter products to many groups and individuals in our area.

If we don’t change the habits of those who litter we will never properly Honor God and His Creation. Wouldn’t it be something if every church preached a sermon on litter and its effect on God’s Creation. Yes, that would something.

If you know some young anti-litter advocates, please let us know who they are so we may assist them and share their story. If you are a church that preaches this sermon then share it with us.
