Noah Sims - On a Mission for Change

B. Clark

When Blue Ridge Mountains News contacted Noah Sims shortly after he appeared on television, we had an idea for a different kind of story. With so many MasterChef fans in the area, it wouldn't take long for most to know he was competing on season 10 and of how well he did.

While waiting for the season finale and interview we asked a few questions and listened to comments around Fannin County and North Georgia.

Everyone who knew Sims, spoke of him with the highest compliments. It was clear many of the comments matched what BRMNews noticed about Noah Sims as he competed each week. Sims often could be heard cheering on an opponent or thanking the guests and judges. His deep voice and sincerity may be why his personality seemed to shine brighter than in any of the prior seasons, influencing many MasterChef fans to conclude he's one of the friendliest contestants of all times.

Viewers of Sims final show, episode 23, were confused as to why Noah was eliminated. Judges Chef Gordon Ramsey and restaurateur Joe Bastianich expressed how well the venison was prepared and Chef Aarón Sanchez and Ramsey “loved” his desert. However, all judges agreed his risotto was not MasterChef level of quality. Even though other contestants made some major mistakes, Noah was eliminated and took fourth place in one of the biggest competitions in America. It was an impressive accomplishment.

Noah explained how he felt about his final episode, “A lot of people did feel that I should have moved on, but I don't feel that way. Nick's dish was so much more advanced and so much more powerful than others. The technical aspect of his dish was exceptional. Leaving the strings on there, rookie move, but it doesn't change the whole flavor profiles that he was dealing out which was big, bold, and beautiful.”

Southerners are known for their manners and Noah Sims is no exception. He is an intelligent, Southern gentleman even under a constant barrage of demands for his time and attention. A smile, handshake, interview, or photo freely given. It was also obvious he's been doing so with little sleep.

Sims kept his promise to meet with BRMNews even after having just returned from taking off on a moments notice to assist with relief efforts from Hurricane Dorian's wrath in Bermuda, before leaving Blue Ridge again in the morning.

Although Hurricane Dorian had passed before his arrival, strong gusts of wind were still felt during the 10 days he was in Bermuda. It kept many on the island from a peaceful rest after a busy day assisting in relief efforts. He thoroughly enjoys helping others and at present plans to go back again in October.

To those who watched this season of MasterChef, it seemed like it all began with Noah taking a big risk. Presenting a burger during a chance of a lifetime qualification round to 3 of the top names in restaurants and of judging foods? Having those same judges rave about a “burger” when they have eaten in or own a Michelin star restaurant showed an uncommon knowledge of taking average to elevated heights. As Noah told viewers that night, he has an “extreme passion for food”. It turned out to be only the first risk he took on successfully.

What most people don't know is with Sims, that passion goes deeper than knowing how to make ingredients come together for an impressive meal. For him it has inspired a quest to right several wrongs and bring the essence of nutrition to the forefront. And yes, he is willing to take more risks.

During BRMNews interview with Noah, several projects he is currently working on to bring his true passion to fruition were discussed. With having to be back on a plane in the morning, Noah suggested we meet next week to further discuss his future plans.

For those MasterChef fans who asked if the show is rigged, Sims feels rigged is a hard word to use. Noah believes it's television and with television it can be biased but that doesn't mean it's rigged. There were some inconsistencies between what actually happened and what ended up on our television screens, but that's common and also doesn't mean it's rigged.
